Leptin become popular and leapt into the headlines when it was identified in 1995 as a protein that triggers weight loss in mice. Hm, getting more and more weight loss option to consider. Well, don’t be confuse, here are some information about leptin and weight loss.

What is Leptin?
Leptin named after leptos the Greek term for thin, is a protein manufactured by body's fat cells. The level of leptin circulating in our bloodstream is directly proportional to the total amount of body fat, or adipose tissue.

Leptin affects our weight and our appetites as well as being affected by total body fat levels, leptin levels will rise and fall quite rapidly in response to both overfeeding and underfeeding. When you lose fat, leptin levels drop and when you gain fat, leptin levels rise. It is now known that leptin not only can affect the chemical responses that affect how hungry you are but also can affect the wiring of your brain.

Leptin acts in the hypothalamus. Hypothalamus is a part of our brain that coordinate many body functions, including our appetite and satiety. Leptin may suppress appetite, resulting in decreased food intake and weight loss.

Hypothalamus Role in Weight Control
Hypothalamus plays a significant role in appetite and energy expenditure. A variety of signals control the amount we eat include chemical signals from the gastrointestinal system to the brain. Leptin enters the metabolic pathway in which hormones travel through the bloodstream to the brain, delivering messages about food intake and energy expenditure.

Leptin and Weight Loss
Diets, especially very low calorie diets, can cause a rapid and marked decrease in leptin levels circulating in the bloodstream. This lack of leptin is responsible for the increase in appetite often found when people drastically reduce calorie intake.

A recent study in The New England Journal of Medicine reports that daily injections of leptin over one year led to decreased appetite and weight loss. The researchers studied a 9-year old girl with a genetic mutation that prevented her body from producing leptin. She was 208 pounds weight, half of them is body fat. Then she losing her weight about 36 pounds body fat ater gave leptin injection for 1 year.

Leptin, Exercise & Weight Loss
Exercise may lower the levels of fat hormone in the body. Fan or thin men who exercised the most had lower levels of leptin in their blood. So, if you get more exercise, you can lower your leptin levels, even if your BMI stays the same. But, This is not the same true for humans. In fact, overweight people have higher levels of leptin than lean people do, which suggests the hormone, which controls appetite in rodents, is being overproduced by the body for some reason. Five years ago, it was believed that leptin research might offer a miracle solution to obesity and the many health problems associated with being overweight. As you get fatter, your body makes more leptin.
